The Tiger Tattler
This class requires students to have a passion for writing. They must want to invest time in class and outside of class grabbing stories from school happenings, world news, and pulling interesting topics from their own brains to share with their peers and teachers. Students are encouraged to have a strong interest in English as well as history to apply for this class/club. When signing up for this class, students must fill out an application, get teacher recommendations, and have a grade of B or higher in their English class the year of and year prior to being part of the Tiger Tattler Staff. The students will be attending school events, taking pictures of their community and doing interviews. All of these require time not only in class but outside of class, so it is pertinent that any students applying for a position on the Tiger Tattler Staff be highly self-motivated.
We publish an 8-12 page, tabloid newspaper once per semester AND produce two online editions PER MONTH.
This paper, both online and tabloid print, is funded through community advertising and a rationed school budget.
We are currently trying to build and acquire better equipment, but that will take time and lots of foot work. :)
Through this program, students will have the opportunity of establishing professional relationships within the community while learning public relations, interview skills, paper construction, ad design, photography and ad sales as they promote funding of their school paper within their community.
Students learn the importance of design, how to use the programs InDesign, Photoshop, and Microsoft Publisher, as well as the difference between journalistic style and APA format from the learned MLA / creative writing style they are typically introduced to in their common core classes.
This club is designed to inspire and aid the inspired student to gain a voice and carry it with him or her throughout life.
We do attend a variety of conferences and competitions throughout the school year and plan on attending camps for journalism in the future when funding allows. We are practicing and refining our skills as journalists at the IHSA competitive level, as well!

*** This class is discussion based. It is pertinent that students are in class every day and ACTIVELY participate by listening, following along,
asking relevant questions! This class ALSO requires students to work independently and be self-driven!
